Passport - Should I change my name?
Hello.
I'm planning a trip back to the UK in December. My GC has my married name on it. My passport has my maiden name on it. I understand that I can book my flight in my maiden name, no problem - just take my marriage certificate with me. What I would like to know if it's going to cause any issues coming back into the USA?
Thank you.

Answering the subject line question: You already have changed your name, yes?
You may be able to have your passport ammended while you are in the UK, to add your married surname.
But something's nagging the back of my mind that that costs the same as a new passport (which will always be cheaper/easier/faster to do from the UK).

Re: Passport - Should I change my name?
Ian - Yes, I plan on taking just a copy.
Meauxna - I have changed my name on my everything other than passport. Your nagging is justified. It can be updated in the UK for the same price as a new passport! In addition, I would have to expedite it and this service costs £129.00 apposed to the regular $77.00. I have 6 years left on this passport too.

There is no conflict in leaving your PP in your maiden name. You need to always book air tickets in the maiden name and carry your marriage certificate.
I never changed my surname, and when DH was still a PR I traveled with our marriage certificate (in Greek!) as a 'just in case' thing. We trip over it every now and then.. absent a shared last name, what IS obvious about a married couple? Nothing! People just have to take our word for it, I guess.

Re: Passport - Should I change my name?
am i correct in thinking that once you've arrived in the US, married and adjusted status (k1 route) that the visa in your passport is superceded by the green card? So if you wish to replace your maiden name passport with married name one, that wont be an issue? or do you need to replace the visa in your brit passport too?
This thread got me thinking bout that

It doesn't matter at all what name is on the K-1 visa, once you've used it up.
If you want to get a new passport with your new name, you don't have to replace anything in your UK passport.

Re: Passport - Should I change my name?
gs,
My wife's native country passport and everything else (drivers license, etc) remains in her maident name, while for everything US she uses my surname.
It's never been an issue, lot's of women do the same.

Re: Passport - Should I change my name?
FWIFW - My wife did this, primarliy because she did not have a middle name prior to marriage and so putting her maiden name in that empty slot seemed a natural thing to do. And, as you say, it does help to minimize confusion.
On the other hand, all of the women close to me who were given middle names at birth (my sister, my daughters, and my first wife) all kept their given middle names and abandoned their maiden names entirely when they married.
Tough call when one is a woman?

FWIW, and this is not limited to immigration -- many married women will often use the names interchangeably once they are married. To minimize confusion, they will use the "married name" convention of "Jane Maidenname Husbandname." In other words, the "married name" includes "maiden name."

Re: Passport - Should I change my name?
I only recently got my green card, but I applied for it in my married name, and everything I do here (bank, cell phone, drivers licence (when I go take the test)). My passport is in my maiden name, and I have traveled on it (when I had an AP) and had no issues. I traveled with a copy of my marriage certificate just in case, and I have been asked to present it when I have traveled with my husband, and sometimes I have just handed it over to avoid confusion!
I plan on replacing it (I believe you can do it from the US, I did some looking around on the Consular website), but I have 2 years left on it and dont want to have to pay for a brand new one just yet. Plus I like the picture on it!

Re: Passport - Should I change my name?
You don't even need your passport for entry to the US, just your green card. So the name on the passport doesn't matter.
