You had better change your mind about planning to extend it ... yes, the passport
needs to be current for six months.

They will not place the stamp in an expired passport - but I do remember someone
posting that you would get the stamp on a separate sheet of paper if you had no valid
passport for the stamp. Here is the post

Yes, but that thread is about a Canadian and Canadians are treated differently in
this issue.

This actually is an I-94. This particular I-94 is *not* to be surrendered to the
airlines or anywhere else, except when the actual card is received. The procedure is
described in INS Operation Instruction 264, online at
<http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/lpbin/lpext.dll/inserts/slb/slb-1/slb-43476/slb-50760>

Thanks for all the replies. My problem is that I wont have a way of extending my
passport any longer after 2003 because I am in the process of renouncing my original
citizenship (otherwise I have to do 2 years of military service) Is it a must to have
the I-551 stamp ? Or is it a pre-requisite to have a valid passport to receive a GC ?
It wasn't a problem when I got my EAD, my passport still wasn't current.

You won't be able to renounce your citizenship unless you have another citizenship
to fall back on. Since you obviously won't be a US citizen by then it sounds like
that plan won't work. It is a must to have an I-551 stamp because the law requires
you to carry your registration documents with you and that will be your
registration document.

Did they even look at your passport then? They didn't when I went for my EADs but it
was the first thing that the AOS interviewer asked for and looked at.

That all depends on the laws of the poster's original country. Some countries do have
prohibitions against renouncing citizenship unless that person does have, or will
receive another citizenship.

BUT, some countries do not have any requirements that you must have another
citizenship before you can renounce your existing citizenship(s). The US, in fact,
does not require that a US citizen must have another citizenship before he can
renounce his US citizenship.

You cannot travel with an expired passport, but it is still considered a valid form
of ID and proof of citizenship. Take Care. Shelley

Of course you can. And an expired driver's license, expired fan club membership
cards, an expired library card, an expired warranty card from your toaster, expired
grocery store coupons, and maybe even an expired relative cremated in a jar, but
international travel is much easier if in addition to or instead of all this you have
a valid passport. Take Care. Shelley

Well, you said "You cannot travel with an expired passport", not "it is easier to
travel internationally with an unexpired passport". Plus you can't use the items
below for international travel. You CAN use an expired passport for this purpose. Not
to everywhere, but to a lot of places. In fact, you can even go to Croatia if you
passport is expired less than 6 months.

I dont really care about traveling on my passport, I dont intend to travel
anywere, especially not where I am originally from. All I was wondering was, if
not having a current dated passport was going to be a problem in getting it
stamped for I-550 or not.

thanks again for all your replies
