Or it could be a B1 for business purposes, which is often issued as a combo B1/B2.

She said he did a tour, and didn't work, so perhaps the visa was arranged by a tour company for that whole group.

But if he is VWP eligible he could use the VWP for business purposes too and still not need a B1/B2. .... Anyway we're just guessing!

I did have dreams of opening up my own bakery thought a few years down the line... I guess I'll juts have to sit on the beach instead

His contract will be a year initially i believe with then (hopefully) an extension. There's no way we'll have money or time to marry before we go (plus he said he doesn't want to waste our only wedding day rushing about if he can afford not to) - will it complicate things if we were to do it over there?
Sponsors have to obtain visas..... this is both time consuming and expensive for the company. So they require skills which are in demand (think IT, Finance, engineering ) and a first degree as a minimum. Jobs which qualify for visas (not all jobs do) also, in the main, require first degrees as a minimum; so if you are being offered, say, a mid level office job, it is not likely to come with a visa option.

You could get married in a registry office with minimum fuss and cost- I married within 4 weeks and then flew off to South Africa. You could then have the 'big party' when you are more settled.

I know what you mean, but for the benefit of those that don't, you CANNOT work on the VWP. You can consult or attend meetings, but nothing more.

You also can't work n a B visa which the OP sounds like he might attempt!

Good point. The VWP and B1/B2 visa have exactly overlapping restrictions on what you can and cannot do. ..... And there's a few odd things you can do on the VWP or B1/B2, like supervise the installation of machinery, equipment, or other products that your employer sold from overseas.
