For most businesses yes, I agree... because they want your repeat business. Not for US immigration, however - because they don't care if they have your repeat business. They're the only game in town, so they have a monopoly on what goes on. Quite simply, courtesy isn't their concern.

Sam - quite right, Ian is the best one to answer this one and I can guess his reply, however, like you, I have been a lurker since starting my application and the site has been extremely useful. Just as a guide, my timeline is as follows.
London interview - 16th December
Recommended for waiver and advised 6 month wait!!!!
Received 2 emails today at 15.59 to submit passport for visa issuance. I will send passport off courier tomorrow and let you know how long it takes to come back. So far 24 weeks gone.

Passport returned yesterday so from London interview (16th December) to passport back in hand (10th June) 25 weeks.
This was my 1st application and have been issued with a 5 year visa. Looks like timescales are starting to fall now so good luck to all.

Does a waiver cost anything when you get refused at a embassy? Holiday visa

No. There is no extra cost for a waiver.

VISA wait times

For all those still sitting waiting for an email just an update re my situation

Interview at embassy in London 17th December 2015
Email received 3rd June 2016 (24 weeks 1 day)

You'll likely be admitted for 6 months. How much longer do you need? Once you spend more than 183 days in the US you become resident for tax purposes and may be obligated to file a US tax return.

... and i want to be able to leave and return!
The US has no interest in what you want. That said, even if you return to the US on the last valid day of your visa, you'll still likely be admitted for 6 months. The visa is simply a travel document... it doesn't determine how much time you're allotted once you're admitted.

No... but it'll be a waste of money unless you apply in 4 or 5 months from now.

got it thanks IAN
i need a longer visa at least until dec 2017 just in case i had any emergency i can travel and come back to the USA.

I wanted to apply for visa renewal earlier just because i know the process and how long it will take to issue a visa for me. ''
so, i should apply for renewal from now on and travel to the USA with my current visa.

I'm afraid that they cancel my current one and say wait for the new one!

thanks again

You're a visitor to the US... what sort of emergency could you possibly have that would require you to come back to the US at a moment's notice?

Y'know - it's your life, your money... do what you want.

Your visa is in your passport. You will only be without your passport during visa issuance.

Hi all,
for those interested in time lines, I have received my emails this morning requesting passport . Interview was February 10th in London so that's just over 18 weeks. Pleased with that !

This is my second waiver and the officer recommended 5 years. Let's see.

Previous waiver was 7 years ago and I got single entry 6 month visa that time ! However I did receive it less than month from interview !!

Can they cancel your current visa? Yes. Will they? There's no way to know in advance. Whether they cancel or not you're going to have at least one visa valid for as long as you require. If they don't cancel, you're going to have two visas with several months that overlap - which, to me, is a waste of money.

But, it's your money - so feel free to waste it.

when I applied for a second visa they had to cancel my first one even with some time remaining on it. they stamped it with "cancelled without prejudice" on the day of my second interview. I got the email today asking me to send my passport in for visa issuance but am away next week so will send it asap after and update with timeline and details of waiver length once I get it back 😊
