Smile Newly-Qualified Nurse emigrating to USA!!

Hello Everyone.....

My name is Nicola <snip> and I am 26 years old living in Guildford, Surrey. I am currently studying to become a Nurse hoping to graduate in July 2012.

I have always wanted to emigrate to America, and have been there on 4 seperate occassions. I have been to Florida, New York, Grand Rapids, Chicago, Virginia and Washington DC.

I was just wondering if somebody could give me some information about emigrating specifically to Grand Rapids or Washington DC. Are these places in need of Nurses??

Any advice or information would be gratefully received.
Kind Regards

Nicola

It's not as easy as you might think.

Demand does not equal visas.

Registering with a state may be an issue as US nurses are required to be general trained and UK training in a lot of cases do not meet requirements and currently no place in the UK offering courses to meet US requirements.

Then there is retrogression and the long long long wait for a immigrant visa allowing you to live and work in the US. That is if you are lucky to find a employer willing to hire you and wait the several years. That may be hard due to the many US nurses currently struggling to find work

Think I am joking although now in Canada and loving it I had a PD of Aug 2006 and would still be in the UK waiting for a visa and would still have a long wait ahead of me.

There is a general shortage of nurses in the US - but you will likely need to retrain to some extent once you're in the US. Unfortunately, there are no visas for nurses and there will likely be no visas for at least the next 10 or so years... and possibly a lot longer than that.. if ever! Research the term "nurse retrogression".

Sorry... I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's the reality of the current situation in the US.

It's a shame there's no nurse exchange program - a friend of mine is a nurse in NY who wants to move to Northern Ireland.

He's a him, actually. And really the family wants to move to the Republic of Ireland, but would do NI if it ended up easier to get into the UK than into Ireland.
