Default Never Picked Up GC After I-751 Approval.

Folks:

I know someone who filed his I-751, was approved, and then did nothing.
He's still walking around with his original GC. I really think
something is wrong here, but I don't know what. Two questions, then:

1. What are the implications of his not having a current GC? I think
it's the law that you have your valid GC on you at all times, but what
are the possible penalties, etc. And what other laws apply? What about
travel outside of the US?

2. How does he go about remediating his problem, if it exists.

Thanks,

Laurens de Jong.

When was the I-751 approved? For that matter, it may not be necessary to
pick up the GC; it may just get mailed.

Not necessarily.

Well, first of all, when filing an I-751, USCIS will stamp your passport
with a new I-551 stamp that is good for, I believe, one year. That is your
new GC at that point.

There really is no penalty per se, as far as I know (there might be a fine).
You are considered a legal permanent resident, whether or not you have the
physical GC.

The biggest problem may be employment. Of course, the social security number
together with a Driver's license is good enough, so it may not be a huge
deal.

Travel outside the USA may also be a problem, as well as applying for
citizenship.

Follow the instructions on the approval notice. I don't think there is a
deadline.

Another way to fix it: file form I-90 and tick the box that says "never
received the GC" (which is true).
