Never Carry Your Green Card
The attached file is from the Union Jack newspaper, which is available to all British Expats in the US. It advises expats to never carry a Green Card with them in case it is lost or stolen. Losing your green card can end in deportation the article states.

So you think the warning from a paper like this trumps USCIS rules? Do you believe everything you read in the papers?

Permanent Resident Card
The Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551, is issued to all Permanent Residents as evidence of alien registration and their permanent status in the US. The card must be in your possession at all times. This requirement means that you are not only required to have a currently valid Form I-551 at all times, but also that you must carry your currently valid Form I-551 on your person at all times. The Permanent Resident Card currently is issued with a 10-year validity. You status as a Permanent Resident does not expire with the 10-year validity. Only the card expires. The card is only valid up to the expiration date and must be renewed before it expires.

A better piece of advice would be to never, never, never commit drug or fraudelent crimes if you don't want to be deported.
And they think just getting citizenship before the GC expires avoids any problems if you have been a naughty person??

And, if you’ve had a Green Card for five years or more, apply for US citizenship – it’s not difficult. Once a citizen, America can’t deport you unless it is discovered you lied on your application.

Re: Never Carry Your Green Card
The article is wrong on another count. There are plenty of people who've gone within a few hundred miles of the border and been stopped by Border Patrol checking green cards and stuff.

I don't carry mine unless I am going abroad or out of state. I do have a colour scanned copy in my wallet though.

Re: Never Carry Your Green Card
When coming back from a trip about 3 years ago I was asked by an IO at the airport if I carried my card at all times. Like others, I only carried it when travelling but I told him yes I did and he still proceeded to give me a lecture on how I would 'face the consequences' if I didn't. Alan B'Stard
After that I made sure the OH knew where I kept it .... so I could call him when I got my one phone call.

Depends where you live, but where we use to live up in Maine, on the coast, there would be random spot checks, I don't know why, the odd dodgy canadian coming over with guns seem to be the big reason, easy money catching people not paying for hunting licenses, so always had the greencard.
