Hi Group !

Basically a legal permanent resident (green card holder) in the US could apply for
naturalization after about 5 years, correct ? Does temporary absence during the 5
year "wait-period" somehow affect the time line of being eligible for obtaining US
citizenship ? I heard that the "counter" is reset to zero if the green card holder is
absent for more than a year. What exactly does that mean?

- Is the waiting time only prolonged by the time of absence or is the total waiting
time actually really set back to zero without regard of how long the resident has
actually physically been in the US?

Does anybody know the exact regulations ? And what are the procedures for applying
for naturalization?

Thank you all.

It means exactly what it says: you would have to wait another 5 years.

Where does one year come from? I read the doc in INS site and it says that continuous
residency must be satisfied. (Green card holder should not leave the USA for more
than 6 month in SINGLE trip.)

and physical presence (Green card holder should not stay outside the USA 30 month or
more in total in previous 5 years.

Could somebody know about exact regulation regarding the period of time in a songle
trip to outside the USA and total preiod of time outside the USA?

With best regard.
