The high school in the next town from us has had 10 cases of MRSA. They think it was caused by staph infections picked up from the football pitch, which is astro turf.
They had health officials out there today doing some testing on it.

Guess the elastic waistbands are quite good for the ever enlarging arses of us Americans.
Scrubs are incredibly comfortable. And anyone can buy them. Even come in all sorts of pretty patterns.

Very nice for lounging around home - NOT out in public imho.

Am I wrong - I believe MRSA lives quite happily on a lot of people's skin, and just gets out of control and causes trouble when they're immunocompromised by illness, or if it gets inside the person - doesn't that sound familiar?

You're right - main cause of infection in hospitals is people admitted with it living on them then staff or visitors transferring it to another patient. Only countries with REALLY low rates of MRSA are the ones who screen all people admitted to hospital and then segregate them - like Holland.

I read this story in my local newspaper a few weeks back... very interesting with regard to US V's UK on medical professional attire. When my mum worked as an RN she was not allowed to wear her uniform outside of the hospital setting... a very good policy to have.

Serenity is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: MRSA Superbug

There've been a few articles about it in the New York Times over the years, including one commenting on the poor hygiene in US hospitals from doctors etc. not washing hands and stethoscopes before treating patients. Sound familiar?

Soon you will come to know what people are talking about when they mention sensationalist media running down the UK.

My sister in law had a bad cold the other day - so they gave her a fortnight's worth of antibiotics.

NO WONDER all these little bugs are immune to it.

I mean, hell, I'm not a doctor, but even I know anti-biotics don't do ANYTHING against a virus. It's a big, fat placebo.

THIS is one of the problems with American healthcare. Stupid people get their knickers in a twist and DEMAND pills of some description. One doctor told me it's quicker to give 'em antibiotics (takes 30 seconds) then to spend five minutes argueing with them that antibiotics don't work.

Yep they hand out antibiotics for anything here. But a lot of people seem to take their kids to the docs for the slightest thing.

They may need a doctor's note to excuse the absence from school and to prove to work (if they took off) that the kid really was sick. they may also need a note from the doc that the kid is okay to re-enter daycare or school (is no longer contagious). Been there, done that.

True I think locally you have to be off 3 consecutive days to need a doctors note, doesn't excuse the over prescribing of ABs though.

Nope, and most responsible docs will refuse. Still, it's a toughie when you have a child screaming in pain from an ear infection -- the studies say that most will resolve without antibiotic use, but it will take longer.
