Moving with my 2000 Subaru Impreza. What do I need to do?
Hi!
I will be moving (K-3 Visa) from Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Chicago,
IL.. What do I need to do (eg Document from Subaru) if I want to
import my car (2000 Subaru Impreza RS)?
I might sell it or bring it with me.. just in cause I can't sold it
before I need to go!! So I will bring it to Chicago..
How easy to trade-in this car if I want to buy a new car in the future
in US?
What about buying insurance?
Register the car with DOT in US?
Thank you!

it should be pretty easy to trade it assuming its similar to the 2.5rs we
have here. Checkout kbb.com and nada.com (not sure about the address of the
last one and was too lazy to check) to see what trade in prices might be.

You will need a compliance letter from the manufacturer for Customs to import the car. As for registration, that is not done with DOT but with the local Department of Motor Vehicles after you have insured the vehicle and in some states obtained a state driver's license. Add the car to your wife's insurance policy or find an insurer through Progressive.

1. You will have to call Subaru (USA) to get a compliance letter.
2. You may have to present this certificate to US Customs when you cross (you may have to pay tax).
3. Bring Customs stamped form, with compliance letter to local DMV, they may require a special inspection (to verify real VIN numbers, etc), then they will issue a permit.
Procedures in Chicago may be different than in NY or NC where I imported cars.
Selling a CDN car in the US market may be more difficult and you may get less $$$ than in Canada:
1. The instruments are metric, a lot of Americans do not want to deal with that (even if the inner speedo dial is mph).
2. Subaru is even less popular in US than Canada
3. Foreign car - period!
4. DRL - many Americans don't like them

Maybe many Americans don't like them but I've noticed on my drive to and from work (during the hours of day light) in NC that between 10% and 20% of cars have some sort of lights on, many that the drivers have turned on voluntarily.
