Default London US embassy Visa Appointment

Does anyone know whether it is possible to call and get a cancellation appointment at the London US embassy for a non immigrant tourist visa? I have an appointment for the 14th September but when i made it the gent on the phone told me it would be possible to call the (premium rate) embassy line and check for cancellations prior to this. I am (like many people I'm sure) hoping to get an appointment asap as i would like to arrive in the US before this date and I'm travelling for longer than 3 months.
Has anyone ever known of this actually happening or was he just pulling my leg? I called this morning and was given the next date of 2 Oct - so i'm not so sure...

I'd appreciate any feedback - ta

Well yeah - obviously i'd like to stay longer than 90 days but it all depends on whether they grant me my visa? I think that is what you meant by your comment? I haven't made any concrete plans yet.

Your friend's experience is what I want to avoid so thanks for the feedback

So you are applying for a B tourist visa then? Why don't you qualify for the VWP? Just curious.

I've never heard of cancellations, but they definitely hold slots
open. These are meant for 'emergency' appointments, and I don't think
'emergency' is precisely defined. I've known people get these
appointments who were temporariy resident in the USA, visiting the UK,
and needed to get new visas to return to the USA - on one occasion
about 6 weeks earlier than the date originally offered. If you can
spin a good enough tale you may be able to get an earlier one, but I
don't see anything in your message that would obviously justify it.

about a week ago we were told the embassy were giving dates of the 27th sept - so the october interview date does seemto fit in with that.
