Default L1 to Green card- Special

Hi, I'd welcome an advise. I am on a L1A visa valid until 2013. However, my employer would like to promote me to manage another country in Asia, as soon as April 2011. My salary will continue be paid in USA based bank account, and i own a house in USA. Can i apply for a Green card on my L1 status and leave to manage that country outside of USA? I should be there for 18 months-2 yrs.
Any prompt response most welcome.

The company could apply ..but you would need to be living in the US ...

Your company can sponsor you for a GC, yes... but why would you/they want to bother if you aren't going to be living in the US? You can keep your house while you're outside the US, but it would probably be easier for the company to simply transfer you, and then reapply/renew your L-1A when you're ready to return to the US.

Well, IF you had a Green Card, and you wanted to work temporarily out of the country for 18 mo - 2 years, I believe you could apply for a re-entry permit to preserve your resident status. I'm not sure, but I believe that the re-entry permit is good for up to two years.

But, if the company wants you to leave as soon as April, I don't think that would give them/you enough time to go through all the Green Card and re-entry permit application process.
