J-1 student visa question

Hi there,

I will be moving to the US from the UK to work using a J-1 visa in a few weeks time.
The contract is for a year, and after this period I am thinking about enrolling in a
post grad degree programme over there. Could someone "in the know" be so kind as to
tell me whether or not this is possible? i.e. working for a year using a J-1 visa,
coming home, and returning to the US to start? Would the fact that I am currently in
possession of a J-1 visa complicate any degree applications?

I know that I am only eligible for a J-1 student work visa up to a year after I have
graduated. Is this the same J-1 visa that is used to study in the US by foreign
nationals?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

- Best regards,

Lee Reilly

Yes, it's possible.

If by degree application you mean application for admission to a graduate degree
program at a U.S. university, then no. In fact it may be an advantage because you can
probably get some recommendation letters from your employer.

If you are referring to the J-1 trainee category, the one-year limitation is not part
of the U.S. government regulations. I suspect that it is part of the policy of the
J-1 sponsoring agency which issued your IAP-66.

Here are the regulations:

Subpart B -- Specific Program Provisions, go to "Trainees."

Is this the same J-1 visa that is used to study

No. That J-1 status category is "J-1 student." Go to "College and university
students" at the above site.

There is a status which is much more often used by foreign nationals to study in the
U.S.: F-1. See
