Default IR2 Visa - next steps in the immigration process

Hello:

Requesting help. My step-son in China has received his IR2 Visa and
will be immigrating in about a month.

Does anyone have information about what the next steps are? It's been
several years since I did a K-1 visa for my wife and I don't know if
the process has changed. Any resources anyone can recommend? Looking
for a "step-by-step" type information source.

Appreciate any help.

Good luck to all involved in your process - K-1, K-3, etc!!!
Take care and have patience!

Regards,
Hal-Man

Hi Hal,

Congratulations to your step-son. With an IR visa, I don't think there ARE any next steps. It's an immigrant visa. He should get his green card shortly after arrival, and if there was a box on the application to check for obtaining an automatic SS number, then that should also come in the mail after his arrival.

It's not like the K visas, where you have to file for AOS afterwards.

Best Wishes,
Rene
p.s. - edit to add: make sure he looks into registering with Selective Service, depending on his age.

Hello Rene,

Wow! It's just that easy, eh? Because he's a family member right?
Cool!

That makes sense the more I think about it. I appreciate the
information very much.

Uh, oh....he's 20. So he'll have to sign up for the selective
service??? Isn't the military all volunteer? I'm in the USA, you?

Thanks again!
Peace,
Hal-man

Currently it is all-volunteer (more career than anything else) but that could change. Not signing up means not being eligible for things like student aid to attend college/university.

He needs a Social Security number, a driver's license if applicable, and health insurance and car insurance (you may be able to or have to put him on your policies).

Next step would be the five-year wait to naturalise, I guess.

Well, it's because he's arriving on an Immigrant Visa (IR-1), rather than a non-immigrant visa (K-1 or K-3).

Yes, he'll need to register. For information on Selective Service, see here: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/howdoi/selsvc.htm

I'm in the USA, you?
Yes, I'm in Arizona.

Best Wishes,
Rene

Thanks again Renee.

Appreciate the link. I'll get him signed up with Selective Service.

Take care!

Peace,
Hal-man
