Default Interpreter needed for the AOS interview??

We just got our "Appointment checklist" and it says "If you do not speak English
well, bring an interpreter who is fluent in English and your native language".

I am the American sponsor and my wife does not speak much English, but I speak her
language well.

1) Can I serve as her interpreter, or do we need to hire a 3rd party interpreter? (I
think hiring an interpreter would be very expensive, and though we have friends
who might do it, it would be quite an imposition on them.)

At the outset of our interview (at Arlington) I told the officer that although my
wife understands English for the most part, I might have to translate certain
questions. The officer said that would be fine. There were only a couple of points
during that we broke into Russian, and the officer didn't seem to suspect that we
were cheating or anything.

My wife speaks spanish and we're in California. I can't believe they wouldn't have
spanish speaking interviewers at the office, there are so many Latinos here...
