Indians again rank high in immigration to US

A whopping one million people migrated to the United States legally in
the last fiscal, with India contributing the second highest number of
immigrants.

A total of 1.06 million people were granted legal permanent residency
in the 2002 fiscal year that ended September 30, 2002, according to
data released by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services
(BCIS) on Tuesday.

About two-thirds of those granted legal status were already living in
the US and were given legal permanent residency, or green cards, while
in the country, BCIS officials said. The remainder are new arrivals
who obtained immigrant visas overseas from the Department of State.

According to the Star Ledge, a newspaper published from New Jersey,
the largest number of immigrants came to the United States from Mexico
(219,380), followed by India (71,105), China (61,282), Philippines
(51,308) and Vietnam (33,627).

The total number is nearly identical to the fiscal year 2001 figures.
In fiscal 2000, about 850,000 immigrants were granted legal status. In
the 1990s, an average of about 700,000 legal immigrants arrived
annually.

The figures relate to immigration statistics released since the
terrorist attacks in New York and Washington DC, on September 11,
2001.

The numbers include only those granted legal permanent residency by
the BCIS. They are separate from data disseminated by the US Census
Bureau, which collects samples from all the people living in the
United States.

Census Bureau estimates released in March show there were about 32.5
million foreign-born residents living in the United States in March
2002, the largest number in history.

BCIS was previously known as the Immigration and Naturalisation
Service (INS).

Another report released in January by the INS estimated that 350,000
illegal immigrants entered the country during the 1990s and that seven
million illegal immigrants currently live in the United States.

How many of these Indians are going to become U.S. citizens?
And how many of them will just stay here to send money back
to India?
I am sure the Indian government likes this foreign source of income.
Because the Indian government is not capable of generating enough in the form
of local taxes there.
