Default I-551 Stamp

Hello,

I have a I-551 stamp in my passport (British) and I am travelling to the UK by United Airlines. In my passport in red ink it states "Processed for I-551 Temporary Evidence of Lawful Admission for Permanent Residence Valid Until Sep 05. Employment Authorized.
However, it says nothing about travel authorized and I am really concerned. Can I travel and re-enter the US safely? I am worried that the United Airlines staff are unaware of this stamp and will give me hassle/problem when I re-enter.

It's a temp stamp saying your a permanent resident and is used until you get the actual card as far as I understand it, it's no problem travelling with the stamp.

No, don't need that, your a permanent resident, so don't need AP for travel, as long as it short term travel. Anything over six months it be worth getting a re-entry permit, but not needed for a holiday.

A temp I-551 stamp is just that. A temporary I-551. The temp version is a stamp. The permanent version is a card. Same thing.

For your reference, the letter that accompanied my I-751 approval states the following:

"You should not travel outside the United States before receiving your new card unless you have first received a passport endorsement from this Service indicating that your new card is being processed."

The temp I-551 stamp is the passport endorsement referred to above.

Happy travels.

Legally, there should not be any problem with it.

In practical terms, your concern may be warranted; the staff at the
airline's check-in counter may not be familiar with the stamp. In most
cases, they will just have to call a supervisor to verify, so likely there
may be a delay rather than an outright problem.

BTW, they might also give you hassle when departing, since airline staff
does check your paperwork when you leave the USA.

We just went to Europe for two weeks, and my husband only had the
stamp in his passport. No problems with anyone understanding what it
was...airline or otherwise.

One note: we did speculate on how easy it would be for someone to fake
the stamp, since its just a red ink stamp with some scribbled
signatures on it. We should have realized that BCIS wouldnt make it
that easy...because sure enough, when we got back to LAX we had to
wait in a seperate line for "seamen" and "pending status" so they
could verify the status on the computer (I guess...). Not a big deal,
but I wish we had known that BEFORE we stood in the regular line for
half and hour.

It's not that easy... It uses security ink and the A# on it makes status
verification very easy. The airlines have to enter the A# into the system
before departure, so if you use a fake number, they will be waiting for you
at the gate...

Yeah I figured it was something like that. Nice to know they are
slightly more hi-tech than I give them credit for.
