I-485 interview
Hi,
I recieved my "request for applicant to appear for initial interview" as
part of my I-485 application process.
The interview is in Cleveland, Ohio, at the beginning of February.
Can anyone tell me what happens at this interview? Is it long, or is it
really quick with no actual questions, like the "interview" was for my
fiance visa at the London US embassy?
It says I have to go with my wife, and has a huge list of things to take
with me, which I havent even had the time to read through yet.
Thanks for any info in advance,
Daniel

Hi Daniel
Congratulations on getting your interview appointment. I remember what a relief it was to get that letter in the mail.
Don't know why they call it an initial interview. If all goes well and your security clearance is in, then it is the only interview ;-) Bet you like the sound of that.
The interview can vary in length from 10 minutes to an hour. Every couple and every district adjudicating officer is different. You and your wife will be asked questions. In our case, I, the USC, was asked the majority of the questions and they were primarily about my husband's former life before our marriage. Don't worry about making a mistake in answering a question, i.e. birthday. I said my husband was born two years after his actual birthyear. We laughed it off when he looked at me and said thank you dear for making me younger ;-)
Bring all that you can to substantiate your marriage both social and financial. Even if you think it is repetitive and/or redunant, it is important. If you have wedding pictures bring them along as well.
Plan on spending at least 1/2 a day there and if you don't you will be pleasantly surprised and can have an early lunch together.
Good Luck

Re: I-485 interview
Thanks :) that sounds a little less scary than what Ian said above... has it
maybe changed a little since he had his interview?

Re: I-485 interview
My wife and I had our I-485 AOS interview right before Christmas. The VO
asked 3 questions about bank accounts, looked at my employer letter and bank
statements and told us we would hear from them in two weeks. The whole thing
was less than 10 minutes.
When my wife received her Welcome letter I saw that it dated her Permanent
Resident Alien status from the day of our interview. We had the card within
10 days of the interview.
