It may be possible to do biometrics at a different field office, but I'd by no means count on it.

I agree. I know it's possible, but my husband's brother got his appointment for Los Angeles and tried to do it while he was visiting El Paso for a court date. They gave him quite a hassle. He finally got it done by getting his lawyer to put in writing why it was a hardship for him to return to LA at that time.
