I am currently in H1. How soon can I apply for an extension before my visa stamp expires?

Six months before the expiry date.

Your visa isn't relevant. Your employer can apply for an extension
of your H-1B petition at most six months before the current one
expires. (If this is a "7th year" extension, they can't apply
until the LC application has been pending for at least a year).

You can apply for a new visa, if you want one, once you receive
the approval notice for the visa extension.

Aaargh - must stop posting while asleep. The last sentence should
of course read "You can apply for a new visa, if you want one,
once you receive the approval notice for the petition extension".
