I assume the question is about citizenship....

1. Need to apply:
a) marriage based - 3 years - 3 months
b) other - 5 years - 3 months
c) service in the armed forces - immediate???

2. Waiting time varies - chicago ~ 6 months, cleveland ~18 months.

You don't need a sponsor of any sort to submit N400.

Usually 5 yrs. 3 yrs if you have been married to a US citizen.
Lesser still if you serve in combat for the US army/navy/airforce etc.
no you dont need a sponser.

n-400?? it's a BCIS form you fill out to apply for citizenship if you meet the requirements. applicants send it in with their photos and $310, including the fingerprinting fee. the process is: mail to appropriate service center w/ check, wait for receipt, wait for fingerprinting appointment, get fingerprinted at application support center, wait for notification to appear for interview at district office, appear at interview.. english, citizenship test, answer questions under oath, submit further information as needed, sign forms, wait for oath letter, appear for oath of allegiance and naturalization certificate, apply for passport $55

this is a basic list.. several other things occur such as FBI background check, name check.. according to BCIS you are fully screened to ascertain you are of good moral character. Shoplifting, for instance, is a felony, DUI, etc. etc.
