What kind of petition or application did you file, or did you have filed on your
behalf? At which INS office (specify exact location) was it filed?

See http://www.usvisanews.com/memo1332.html. You are a victim of the "frontlog."
You can call the INS Vermont Service Center phone number, wait to speak with an
Immigration Information Officer, and ask that person to look you up on the computer
alphabetically by name. Your case will not show up until it has been entered into the
computer system.
You should probably be sitting in your place of employment, ready to have a human
resources person pick up the phone, because only the employer or attorney is supposed
to get information from INS about your case, and some IIOs are picky about that.

If you paid by check the case number is usually on the back of the cancelled check.
