ACLU's Diaz straddles cultures Born in Puerto Rico, schooled at Marquette, he speaks
to both sides of divide

By GEORGIA PABST of the Journal Sentinel staff

Last Updated: April 17, 2001

When Micabil Diaz hands you his business card, one side is in English, the other side
in Spanish. If there were a third side, it would be in French.

For Diaz, the new legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin,
language and culture are important elements of who he is and what he does.

"Because I'm bicultural, I identify with issues that happen to other cultural
groups," he said.

Chris Ahmuty, executive director of the ACLU, said he believes Diaz fits well with
where the ACLU in Wisconsin is headed in the new millennium.

"With the state's population becoming more diverse, it's important to have
leadership that's reflective of the people we're trying to serve," said Ahmuty,
noting that new census figures show the Latino population in the state has doubled
in the last 10 years.

They generally do this where there are large Mexican populations; I'd imagine in
Milwaukee there are sufficient numbers there where there was interest.

I mean you won't find Carribean festivals where there aren't a large number of
Carribean people.

So why didn't you post this in a newsgroup specifically discussing Mexican
culture/issues/etc?

Victor,

While scuzzball didn't have a clear point in his post (except maybe for the one atop
his head) the fact that he thinks Mexico and Puerto Rico are near each other further
demonstrates my point about the need for someone to have at least a basic
understanding of the issue (in this case "Mexican celebration day") in order to
present a coherent point.

He might as well have asked the Chinese.

Hmmm, Cochise. Do you enjoy making these bigoted comments? You're such a ****ing
loser. If you'd read David Eduardo's previous post to me, you'll see that you're
wrong. And let me emphasize something. Hispanics want NOTHING to do with Mexico and
they want to be Americans. However, they want to hang on to their heritage which I
think they should do. Yippy-ki-ay, mother****er!

As posted previously, I think that Cochise has trouble reading through the little
slits in his hood. Cogent thinking is not his strength anyway; almost all of his
posts are either pure profanity or totally unrelated to facts.

Of course, he will see this comment as troll bait and bite with however many teeth he
has remaining.

Mexicans, well, they despise Americans and have no respect for American laws. They
need to be *ejected*, got that? They need to fix their own ratty country.
