Does anyone know if it is possible to hire a car for a couple of months in California? I am only planning on visiting for a few months so seems pointless to buy one, cant seem to find any websites.

Two terms used here:

"rent"--day, week, month
"lease"--month, year

Rental cars can do a month or two, but prove expensive. Leasing a car is probably not possible, but you might google 'short term car lease' or something.

Bigger cost will be insurance. If you 'rent' you can get some waivers added to your policy (or use the damage waiver of your credit card).

This is a pretty common question so you might want to search the forum

Try google.com. I find it impossible to believe that you can't find a car rental site. Try the usual companies, many of them do a deal for longterm rentals. eg. Enterprise

Most car rental contracts are for a month max...
you just have to go back in and sign up for a further month

I rented a car for 6 months via Enterprise when I was there with work and had no issues.
