It might depend on what type visa. I would think as long as the visa is
valid and you can show you are going to leave before it expires there
should not be a problem.
One other thought - Maybe you can get lucky and renew it before you come
to the U.S.

It shouldn't affect the officer's decision to let you in, just how long he will let you in for.

Yes, it is OK. You can use the visa up to the very last day it is valid. The
immigration officer's decision shouldn't be affected by that.

The decision how long to admit you is independent of the visa, but rather
depends on the purpose of your visit. Tourists will usually be admitted for
six months, even if the visa is only good for one more day. Students would
be admitted for D/S (duration of status, or as long as they are students).
H-1Bs would be admitted for the duration of their petition + 10 days. And
so on, and so on.

I agree in principal with a couple exceptions.

If someone sought admission for the first time on an H1B visa the day before it expired, they may attract some attention. They may be concerned that the company is no longer expecting the person. The same may go for a student that is really late for school.

Absolutely agreed; these are good points. I would like to point out that
both really are tied to the *beginning* of the underlying situation, not to
the visa expiration. As a matter of fact, for some nationalities, it is
very common that H-1B visas are issued with very short durations and as
single entry. So you may end up using the H-1B on the last day of the visa
validity, and still be at the beginning of your petition.

No problem. crg and I were just trading stories about special situations and
fine points of the law here ;-)

A B-1/B-2 visa is good for entry up to the last day of its validity. Do make
sure that your passport is valid for as long as you want to stay plus six
months (for some countries, it's enough for the passport to be valid for
the duration of the stay).

Yes. You are only allowed to have one visa of any particular type at a time.
