Hello,
I'm currently doing my Engineering at Coimbatore,India.Next year I'll
be appearing for the GRE. I dont know anyone in US.But I'm hankering
to study at the US.Will any one give me some guide lines about the
monthly expenses of a normal US student and about the part-time jobs I
can get in the US.It will be a great deal of help if anyone could give
me some suggestions. Also tell me about the best and cheap engineering
colleges at USA.

Sincerely,
Ramesh...

Depends on where you live. You cannot work on a student visa, except on campus.
Such a job can only provide supplemental income. Your main expenses will have
to be borne by you, unless you have a teaching or research assistantship.

It will be a great deal of help if anyone could give

There is no such thing. Best is not cheap. Besides, what do you mean by "best"?
Also, you do not mention what your field is...

Sorry-I know nothing about engineering. However, there are a lot of IT people
on this newsgroup who can provide such info. As I mentioned before, expenses
depend on where you live. Suffice it to say, it is not cheap. I have no idea
what the university fees are these days--it has been a long time since I was a
student-perhaps some recent student or even Sylvia can provide insight.

In US, Computer Engineering, CS, CIS, SWEN (Software Engineering is
Grad level only) are usually offered in Department Computer Science at
school of Natural and Applied Science, not in School of Engineering.

Get a hold of Peterson's Guide to Graduate School. There might be
many different ones, say one for School of Enineering, one for Natural
Science, etc.

As far as financial support, The school will give you "Application
Package for Internationmal Student" which would include 'Financial
Affidavit', referred to as sponsor. If you have enough money in a
bank account, you can just show a bank statement. Otherwise, someone
must provide sponsor that would cover your first year expense
(tuition+books+living expense).

As a grad student, you are likely to get Teaching Assistant (or
Research Assitant) offfered by department but you must specificalluy
apply for it. Some schools do not give for the first semester. Some
school gives as yearly contract but some gives as semester contract.
Int'l Student on F-1 is allowed to work up to 20 hrs/week on campus
such as Lab Assitant or working in library or food service. TA or RA
are also considered work and they usually comes with out-of-state
tuition fee waiver (only pay instate rate) or complete tutition fee
waiver.

I heard that FIT used to give instate tuition fee rate to those on F-1
who gets lab assistant position but that is semester based.

Use some search engine and find out what other types of scholarship
may be avilable to you. Also the schools smay have specific deadline
to apply for those.

This is immigration forum and I doubt that you will get much more info
that this on financing your education. I do have some tips though.
If you run out of, money half way through your study, you might
finance it by using Credit Cards which graduate studnets can apply and
get easily. A lot of students do that. As far as working off campus,
who is going to stop you if you get some part-time job, say at a
convenient store owned by a Indian. Some students do that in their
first semester before they get TA or RA. etc.

There are many Indian Student organizations and you might want to
contact them.

Huh? Where do you get that from???
That may be true at the college you are at, but there are lots of
universities where CS is part of the engineering school.
It all depends on the university. Some universities have computer
science schools...
And why would SW Engineering be "grad level only"??? Any good CS
curriculum has SW Engineering courses. Or do you mean a degree in
SW Engineering? Again, that would be specific to a particular
university.
Amanda, you really should not answer questions when you don't know
anything about it...

Amanda,

that's called ILLEGAL employment, and if it doesn't get him deported (and it does happen) during his course of study, it may cost him his future chances of getting permanent residence.

Some students may do it because they may not care what happens next, or they are too desperate to care, or they may have a U.S. citizen spouse in the future, in which case illegal employment may be forgiven.

Oh, I missed that. And this comes from a person who is against the DV lottery
because of alleged fraud... geez.

what joe said.
ce mostly falls under the auspices of ee, hence the college of eng.

some coll./univ. may have ce separate from ee. some IT (NOT ce) stuff may also
be placed under coll. of business.

As a major, it has to be.

I wasn't referring to courses; he knew what I was talking about unlike
you.

Commonly used major description:
CS- Computer Science
CIS -Computer Information System
SWEN- Software Engineering

Some University do offers ceritficate programs but F-1 student must be
in degree seeking programs.

You are the one who didn't understand what he *needed* to know as a
potential F-1 student who wants to get TA,RA, etc. Yes, potential F-1
student.
Why am I not surprised that you are clueless?

    >
    > -Joe
I guess, it took you a few days to do research so that you can come
here and talk crap. You forgot that he needed to meet F-1 regulations
requirements and also his aim to get financial support, didn't you?

I was merely stating what *A LOT* of Indian students do. Once he gets
here, he wil have many fellow Indian students guiding him how to
survive. I am merely letting him know how his fellow Indians citizens
foreign student manage.

Why do people want to pretend that these things (illegal activities)
are not happening and are not part of OUR *daily* lives....geez.

Poor Amanda...ya gotta feel sorry for her...first advocating having a guy let

Ummm, just because something allegedly goes on, does not mean you have to
suggest that as an option...
