Has anyone postponed the naturalization oath ceremony ?
My naturalization interview is scheduled for September 25th. I have a
3-week trip overseas towards the end of December/07. If the oath
ceremony happens in a month or two after the interview, I will have
to
apply for a passport. Passport processing time these days seem to
take a few months. I don't think I will have enough time to get a
passport before my trip.
I have planned this trip for months with my wife and her friend. The
trip is paid for and we already have tickets, hotel reservations,
etc...
Other than cancelling the trip I thought of two other options:
1) Go to the passport processing center in Houston and request a
passport in person with some evidence of my trip. I can drive or fly
into Houston for that, but I am not sure if I would get a passport at
the end choosing this route.
2) Postponing the oath ceremony. I am not sure if this is a good idea
either. Would it be possible to request another oath date after my
return to the US, or will the next date assigned automatically be the
next available oath ceremony date ? Has anyone had any experience
with
postponing an oath ceremony ? I am afraid I can be out of the country
when the I get the second notice.
Any suggestions you can share would be appreciated.

When you apply for a passport you write your travel plans in. There is a whole section online about getting a US passport and what to do if you need it inside 14 days. I think you do have to go to your local service center and you can get expedited processing. I was just reading this online yesterday at USCIS website.

Passport processing times are nowhere near "months". We got one for our daughter, expedited, and it arrived within 10 days. Costs you an extra $60 or so. And chances are you can get it all sorted out at your local post office.

I postponed my oath ceremony in early April for the same reasons you are considering postponing. My ceremony was rescheduled for the middle of July, so the new ceremony was about 15 weeks later.
Having said that, I ordered my passport the same day as the ceremony, I paid for expedited processing and overnight delivery each way, and the passport arrived in two weeks and two days.

For new citizens the passport processing time is pretty fast. The wait is
for born citizens who have never had a passport. USCIS has to do a
background check on the app before they issue a passport and that can take a
long time. For new citizens all the checks were done before they were
granted citizenship so the passport department issues passports pretty fast
to them.

Does anyone have any experience with having to change the venue of the

Otherwise, you suck it up, and take the oath ceremony in the state where you live.
