Generally, if you have no degree, then you need 12 years of experience (3 yrs experience x 4 yrs school). It's a tough sell, but people have done it.

It doesn't matter what field of expertise.

Ian has it exactly right. It's a VERY tough sell. Not impossible, but it's an uphill battle.

Merely documenting the years of experience will generally get you nowhere; you must in addition make certain that former employers confirm your dates of employment, outline your duties, structuring their letters to emphasize your growth and increasing level of responsibility. Detail. Detail. Detail!

A good immigration attorney will work with you -- and your former employers -- to craft the letters in a way that make them as compelling as possible to USCIS.

Finally, your attorney should work with a competent credential evaluator, so that the attorney can work together with the evaluator for an outcome that will lead to a affirmative decision by USCIS.

Best of luck,

Does having some university experience (say, four years) count toward something, if one did not obtain a degree?

University coursework can count toward a degree, yes. The evaluator will determine how much time to credit toward the equivalency.

I've just done it with less than 12 years experience, but I have been on a MSc course since (last) September. I was also unable to verify my full work history.

Notwithstanding the above, there are hundreds of thousands of unemployed computer worked in the US who need no visa for employment.

Having said that, however, my employer has 2000 or so open positions, mostly in the computer field, and will sponsor H-1Bs for very highly skilled candidates.

But "very" means "***very***." For people in the UK, gaining employment with the UK or other European arm followed by transfer to the US on an L visa is the most likely route in the absence of any other means of entry to the US.

I did it without any form of university education - but lots of relevant and quite specialized experience.

I started an online MSc last September, then just after started in my current role. In January work asked for volunteers to move to the US, with formal procedures starting early April. I was the test case for the business. It was discovered I had no degree and about 11 years work experience, not all verifiable. After getting evaluated, the lawyers considered I would be ok. My visa (and my wif'es) should arrive this very day from the US embassy.

Having a separate entity accept me on a post grad course before my application probably made up for the missing years. The entry requirements for the MSc where with a degree or 'significant work experience' (but no definition of that)

Did my H1B with 15 years experience in a specialised field. Had all my related coursework and work experience vetted by a Professor at a university in Florida who did and equivalency rating to show I met the necessary requirements. That part of the process took an additional 3 months before the actual application back in April 05. Now just biding my time on the actual AOS coming through

@Paul S

Thanks for replying on my post. Was just wondering what service were you using for it to take three months? Premium or normal one?
