is H1B issued for 2 years now?
Hi All,
I hold a H1B issued on 4/2002 and it has a 2 years duration. Other
colleagues here have H1B issued for 3 years, but they were issued
before 9/11. Is this difference because of 9/11 or it's not related?
I couldn't find a 2 years case and I've been reading that it's
possible a 3 years extension. Will it be for 2 years in my case? If
that is the situation, maybe I won't have enough time for my green
card process which I haven't started, considering the current 3-4
years involved including labour certification.
Any other comment would be very appreciated, many thanks.

It may have been a mistake, either an INS mistake or a mistake of the
lawyer who filled out the form and may only have requested two years.

I've not heard about any change to 2 years by default, but it
sounds like you misunderstand how H1-B timings work.
You can work for up to 6 years at a time in H1-B status.
There is no restriction on the number of changes or extensions
within this period. If you only get granted 2 years at a time,
you can extend twice to get a total of 6 years. There should
be no impact on the time you have available to get a GC.
