Default H1B I94 Mixup and Passports

So on entering the USA, we were made aware for the first time that our I94's are dated to match our passport expiry despite my H1B and my families H4's being valid for 3 years.

So right now, I have 2 years on my I94, two of my children have 11 months and my wife and other child has the full 3 years (new passports).

Am I correct in assuming that the simplest way to extend/replace the I94 is to use the Washington UK Passport office, renew the passports, then exit/enter the US with BOTH the new passport and old passport (with valid H1B/H4 visas)? And could I do this at the US/Canadian border or do I have to return to the UK?

Yes. You might want to tackle the 2 children's passports now - since you never know how long it will take to get them back. Your own passport can wait for another year or so before worrying about renewal.

Yes, I believe you can.
