H1B - Deportation costs query
I have an H1B which expires in May 2004 however my employer will likely cut my contract in the next two months.
Am i correct in thinking that they should be liable for all costs resulting from my early deportation (moving goods and family back home, apartment lease termination costs etc.) ???
Also, if this is true, can the employer get around this by offering me another job (lower position, lower salary, different location etc.) to what I was originally hired to do, for the remainder of my visa timeframe ??

The employer only has to pay for your trip back to your homecountry, not for any other costs like moving furniture or fees for early lease termnation etc...(except, you have a contract, preferably written, with different agreement). But by law, it's only your trip home he has to pay.

To clarify, would it just be my airfare they have to pay for, or would my accompanying family be entitled also (wife and child) ??

I think it would be only your airfare.
By the way, don't call it "deportation cost". Deportation means that the
US pays for your removal if you were illegal, and then bans you for a long
time. In your case, it is simply the cost of return transportation.
The reason I emphasize this is that if you use the word deportation around
government officials, you may likely cause major misunderstandings and
problems.

US pays for your removal if you were illegal, and then bans you for a long

They only need to pay for your return ticket, and I guess they could
buy it for almost immediately after you are fired since the law does
not specify any grace periods
Did they pay for the original trip for your wife also? is so, you
could try to convince them that they should pay for her too
If fired they definetely need to pay you for anny unused and accrued
vacation time plus they can't discriminate agaist you for being a
foreigner - so if the average person they fire gets a given severance
(i.e. 2 weeks per year) then you are eligible for that too
My suggestion, don't wait to get fired - look for another job now,
that way you leave when you are ready
