No, not aware of this as an option. I spoke to the company's immigration lawyer yesterday and he didn't raise this. I am an IT programmer subcontracting to the US company under my Limited Company(of which I am the sole employee and Director and the US company is my sole client). Would this really qualify me for an E-1?

This is something you would have to do for yourself and not your client's lawyer, which is why he may not have raised it. Contact a UK based immigration lawyer, or at least one that is familiar with the procedures in the London embassy. The main issue may be the 'substantial trade' requirement, but there is no guideline for what this should be as a minimum.
