greencard expiring going to canada tomorrow
Hello,
My greencard is expiring in february and I am returning from Vancouver
in March. I was wondering if there's any way I can begin the renewall
process while I am in Canada and get my passport stamped with the
i-551 equivalent stamp. your help is much appreciated.

I would suggest you go to the American Embassy/Consulate in Vancouver and
apply NOW. They can guide you along.

I agree with R J, and I think that you will have to make a trip to the U.S.
before the expiration date of your PR card just to get the stamp in your
passport. Those stamps are not given outside the U.S. The Consulate can
probably give you a "boarding letter," but you are better off doing things
the right way. This is something you should have considered before you left
the U.S.

if he's close enough, couldn't he just cross the border and get it
done in washington and travel back?

Also check to make sure your passport hasn't expired.

Paul,
Why don't you just renew your green card before going back to Vancouver
or go to the nearest INS office file a petition to replace your GC by the
reason of lost GC? If you go to the INS office, expect to spend the
whole day. If you go to the designated office for renewing expiring GC,
this should take 2-3 hours. Check with the INS website for the locating.
Good luck,
Andy

Thanks for the help guys. Actually, my friend's brother in vancouver
works at a immigration law office and he was able to help me out. I
went to a INS office in Vancouver and surrendered my greencard, they
stamped my passport and it didn't even take an hour! He even said that
even with a month expired GC (actually only a couple days expired
since i'm returning march 2st) they probably won't give me any hassle
about it. But just to be safe I got it taken care of.. I can't believe
I stressed over it so much..

I like this stuff. People bitch about the way the US operates but they
either don't want to leave or they are breaking down the door to get in.

That's right Andy. Circumvent the law. Oh, I sent your post to the INS &
FBI with headers.
