Got my SS, it's not being recognized
Hi all,
I recently got my SS card as a result of my marriage based application. The card says "Only for work purposes" or something close to that.
My wife and I opened up a Upromise account to save up for our college since neither of us have 4 year degrees yet. (We're trying really hard)
After getting the Social I signed up for Upromise and everything was fine until I got an email saying they weren't able to verify my number. They said if I'd had my name changed then we should inform the proper authorities.
In unrelated news I've been applying for some credit cards in my name to establish credit and have been denied eveytime.
Is something wrong with my SS number? Does it even exist to creditors or even a company like UPromise? I'm baffled Does the "Only for work purposes" hide my social from being used to do anything other than work?
Thank yous,

Don't worry -- I had the same problem. If your SSN is younger than 5 years, then companies need additional verification of the number, such as photocopy of it, quite often. I was denied Discover card, because of it -- they have very stringent rules.
Try to open a credit card with your bank -- it's a lot easier.

for verification purposes you need to provide the number at the back of the card.
as for credit cards, you will have to establish some credit (???) history before you can get one.

LucyMO,
Thanks for the heads up info. I emailed Upromise back to see if I could indeeed send them a copy or anything further. I'm glad to see it's not just me. If they want a copy I'll gladly give it
Gross50,
I see the number you're talking about, it's red at the bottom right side? Have you had to show it for getting a credit card, or for other things? Ive never before heard of anyone getting asked for it, I'm curious now.

I got my credit cards through my employer so I didnt have to worry about credit history, all they asked for was a US address and SSN

By the way everyone, I got a response from Upromise and they said I dont have to do anythign further since it's a normal thing for them. They said it happens when people move and change addresses.
Thanks for the info
