Default Got the Green card, can I leave without??

Hi,

In November of last year I got the GC in the mail stating my app had been approved.
All very happy until I realized they had the country of birth wrong.

I filled in the appropriate forms, mailed them off and have heard nothing other than
the receipt from the USPS to say INS received it.

I last heard the INS was processing Jan 01 replacement cards, so that does not look
any speedier than their normal incompetent efforts.

I need to go to the UK in the near future for business, the temporary permanent
residency stamp in my passport has now expired.

What happens when I return if I leave the US without the card? The form with the card
said I had been approved, will the INS computer at the airport show that even though
I do not have the actual new card yet??

A cynical person might begin to suspect the INS is either incredibly incompetent or
incredeibly clever at making more work and therefore hiring more employess to cope
with the inept abilities of the existing staff.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

The INS computer will have a record of your status, so you will be fine.

You should have no trouble when returning from the UK since it is a waiver country.
However, if you were traveling from some other countries and didn't have a visa to
the US, they wouldn't let you on the plane.

If that was the situation for someone else, they should go to the nearest INS office
and get their passport stamped.

Thanks, I guess the INS being the incompetent-INS I will go waste a day at the local
INS 80 miles from here and get it stamped anyway.

If you were to try to travel saying you were going to use the visa waiver, you would
have to have a return ticket. I would also expect to be given a grilling before being
allowed to board the plane.

And that is what I would do here too.

Andy.
