I don't have an answer for your other questions, but I'm guessing that a member of congress will do this because, being a politician, you're likely to remember this the next time s/he comes up for re-election. That's the cold, cruel answer. The warm, fuzzy answer is that the person got into politics in order to help her/his constituents. The middle ground answer is that every member of congress periodically reports to congress on the issues and activities in which they've been involved... and, as much as they may hate the interference, USCIS doesn't want to receive complaints from the upper eschelon!

Sheila and I got her senator involved in our case when (then) INS would neither confirm nor deny that our application had been forwarded to Montreal, and the US consulate in Montreal would neither confirm nor deny that it had been received. Within a week Sheila received a very nice letter from the senator indicating that an inquiry had been made and that Montreal had, in fact, done a search and our file was indeed there. Of course, this was in 1998 and the world was far less complicated then.

Hi Debs,

I think a lot depends on the congressman. I have read cases where the congressman jumped right on it, got something accomplished, and all cleared up. There are others who did minimal to nothing. I think what they will do is make an inquiry about you case. Beyond that, they may or may not keep up on your case. I've seen cases where they write an inquiry and the response is still "pending security check" at which point the congressman passes that information to you, which you already know. It might be worth a try, just keep in mind you might get a wide variety of help....from basically nothing, to someone who really fights for you.

Best Wishes,
Rene

Also bear in mind that even if the response is that the clearance is completed you must still wait for the DAO who interviewed you to tap into the system, note the clearance and then retrieve your file and approve in and send the I-89 to be manufactured and a letter to you notifying you of the final adjudication of the petition.
