Would it be OK to use the F2 to attend the conference? or does the F2 visa have restrictions in terms of what she can and can not do, say, for her professional growth (excluding attending school and taking paid employment - I understand those are not allowed on F2).

Can she mention to the consular officer during her F2 visa interview that other than visiting her F1 spouse, she might also attend this conference which she has been invited for and for which they're also willing to pay the travel and lodging expenses ?

Thanks.

Hi Crg14624 or anyone,

I understand my previous questions were difficult to answer as they were subjective...but do you have any thoughts on my last question above about attending a conference etc while on an F2? Thanks.

Volunteering can be tricky. It depends on the nature of the arrangement and the type of organization she is participating with. If it's the Compeer thing, it would likely be allowed because it's a nonprofit group benefiting the community at large and she isn't being paid.

OK, we have some more questions - these are on the DS-156 form.

If one is applying for a US visa (F-2) from a third country where s/he is currently studying for the past 3 years, in the DS-156 form:

Item 15: what should s/he indicate as his/her "home address"? The present country of residence or their permanent native country?

Also, item 26: how long do you intend to stay in the US ?
If one is applying for an F2 - what should be an appropriate answer here?

and finally, item 27: what is the purpose of your trip ?
--Would "to visit F-1 spouse" be a reasonable answer? or will the term 'visiting' be frowned upon?

Anyone want to comment on the three questions on the DS-156 form please? Much appreciated.

When the word "home" is suggested, does the applicant think of where s/he currently is, or the native country? Put that down.

Don't put a specific date. "until F-1 spouse's studies are complete" is accurate. Or put "3 weeks" or "2 months"... whatever is the truth. It won't really make a difference.

If it's the truth, say so.

The F-2 is a dependent visa, so it'll be valid for as long as the corresponding F-1 visa is valid. All that's required is a copy of the F-1 visa and a marriage certificate.
