Expired EAD and Employment - Please help

My EAD was expired past a few days. I have submitted the renewal applicaiton a month
ago and got the receipt but new EAD hasn't been issued yet. The receipt said it would
take about 80 days to process the application. Can I still be employed before the new
one is issued? Or can it endanger any further processing down the road? Any
suggestion or insight would be very helpful. Thanks. MK
