Default Expired Canadian Passport

I am currently a permanent resident of the U.S. with an expired
Canadian Passport (actually, no passport now, as it had to be sent
back with the application). The application for a new passport is in
the works, but with the anticipated timeline of approx. 2 more months,
can I enter Canada and re-enter the U.S. with my green card in case of
a family emergency? I'm sure that I read online that this was
possible, but I can't seem to find it now.

Thanks!

If you are flying, no... you *must* have a passport. If you're driving, you do not currently need a passport, but you will probably be asked to show picture ID up the wazoo! Take your Canadian birth certificate with you when you travel. By January 2008, you *will* need a passport even if you are driving across the border.

I guess reading comprehension wasn't one of your better subjects in school.
