Entry on visitor visa
Hi.
Does anybody know how long visitors (on B visas) are being allowed entry these days
through San Francisco? My in-laws are supposed to be here next month for their first
visit. I know that the proposed new regulations have not yet gone into effect, but my
wife and I are hearing stories about people currently being allowed entry for less
than the standard six months.
Thanks, Debashis Dhar

My parents are coming in the next month too. Does anyone know the how many months are
being issued for visitors?

It varies. You're not supposed to automatically be admitted for 6 months, anyway.

The six months were the rule, but there have always been exceptions, both longer
and shorter.
To be honest, I can't shake the feeling that the whole proposed restriction on
tourist admissions is a smoke screen to conceal the restriction on students. INS
proposed both at the same time, expecting an outcry about the tourist visas, and - my
guess - will eventually back down from it but keep the student restrictions that by
themselves would never fly.

My honest opinion is that they should start tracking and deporting overstays instead
of just putting restrictions. Restrictions do nothing if they are not enforced.
