Entering US - passport name and greencard name completely different
hello all,
My wife and I plan to re-enter the US soon and we were concerned that
my wife's greencard name (1st *and* last name) does not match her
passport.
Just a bit of info first:
-- My wife's passport name matches our marriage certificate. We were
married in the US btw. I brought our marriage certif with us as a
re-entry document but we don't have any documents showing how she
changed her 1st name.
-- Her greencard name matches all her US IDs.
-- Her passport name is *completely different* (1st and last name)
from her greencard.
-- She still has her temporary greencard stamp in her passport and
it's still valid. ie it hasn't expired yet.
When she re-enters the US and shows her passport, greencard, and
marriage certificate, how can we prove to the INS that they are all
the same person?
We were thinking that if the name differences are a problem when she
passes through immigration, she still has her temporary greencard
stamp in her passport and the stamp is still valid at the time we
return to the US. Would it be best to simply use this or show the
greencard and see what happens?
thanks everyone!
I'll be sure to post our entry experiences and outcome after we get
home :-)

hi,
> Picture ID, no?
luckily yes!
i spoke with the US embassy here (in Bangkok) and they (the INS dept
w/in the embassy) said that since the 1st name is also different my
wife would have a pbm entering the US. Usually you just show a
marriage certif but they said this was different and that they've
never come across this before. No mention about using a picture ID
when re-entering.
They also said we should consider adding her real 1st name to the
greencard. Didn't know that could be done. Anyways, they said we'd
need to fill out form I-90 at the time we enter the US.
They said she should use her temp greencard stamp in her passport
since, luckily for us, it hasn't expired yet.
We've been trying to change her passport name but it's been like
chasing your own tail.
Thai passport office must have a fotocopy of the greencard officially
stamped by the U.S Embassy/INS here but the INS doesn't do that. They
can only validify the original card.
The INS here said that maybe we could ask the American Citizens
Service to get the fotocopy notarized but after talking with them they
said notarizing is only for signatures.
We ran out of ideas.
We'll return using her temp greencard stamp in her passport and add
her real name to her greencard.
-- Anyone with experience adding a name to their greencard?
-- If my wife has to leave the US on a family emergency, and her temp
greencard stamp has expired, can she return to the US? She'll have
her greencard with her of course but who knows how long it'll take for
the INS to get her a new one with her real name added.
