I just wanted to add a follow up to this as we've got a bit further down the line.
It transpires it is not possible to have two visas of the same type, and in this context an E-2 Essential Employee visa is the same as an E-2 Derivative visa. My attorney was told by the consulate that they would not issue one without cancelling the other.
