Default Dual residences retirees US/UK

Anyone have info on how to get the best of both worlds .. I am thinking of buying a property to rent half of year in UK and to use there myself the rest of the year . I live in the US and am a dual citizen.. Anyone done this? I'm wondering how I would be able to get temporary NHS coverage while I'm there.. Any thoughts?
