Default dual passports for kids

My wife and I are British (currently applying for US citizenship) but our two children (ages 2 and 4) are both British and US citizens by birth. They both have US passports but I also want UK passports for them. The UK passport application asks if the child has had any form of passport, including any non-british one. If I say yes, I'm required to attach it to the app unless I lie and say it's lost; if I say no, then I'm lying in the application - something I'm not comfortable doing?

Any advice on what I should do? If I attach the US passport to the UK passport application, will it be returned to me intact?

Thanks for any help

It will be returned. They want to see the children's U.S. passports as proof of their ID, not to confiscate them. The forms could be a lot clearer in that respect.

Have you applied to the Embassy for them to have British birth certificates as well? That is recommended as well.

Both Britain (for British citizens) and the U.S. allow dual citizenship.

They're the property of the USA Government, so there'd be an
international incident if they didn't return them ...

I can concur with both points being made. When I applied for my
British passport at the British High Commission in Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada, I had to submit both my US and Canadian passports. They were
mailed back to me within a few days and the passport came a few weeks
later. The forms could be a little clearer in indicating this.

I applied for my sons UK passport last year.
I sent a copy of the photo page of his US passport with the application, not the original.
