Does an F-1 awaiting AOS require I-131 to travel to Canada?
The rules for the I-485 state that even "brief visits to Canada" constitute an
abandonment of one's AOS application, unless one has an I-131 approved. I am a
applying for AOS from F-1 status, and as an F-1 student (Canadian), I have never had
any problem with travel and rentry, which I undertake frequently, so long as my I-20
is signed in the right place by the designated school official. Would I lose this
privilege simply by virtue of having an I-485 pending? And if I had to file the
I-131, would it (if approved) allow me flexible travel, or multiple trips on
predetermined dates, or only one trip on predetermined dates?
Thanks to anyone who would share their knowledge of these matters with
me. Jesse

Yes, once you file the I-485 you are no longer in F-1 status and you would abandon
the I-485 by leaving the US.

You can apply for multiple entries and then use it as you wish. Note that after you
have used AP once, you can continue to "reuse" that entry for your brief trips to
Canada just as you did with your F-1. You would need to have your AP document with
you each time though. You'll have to renew the AP document each year that your
application to adjust status is pending.
