Clearance for Visit Visa.
Hi All
I have a question for one of my friends.
He has applied for a Visitor's Visa to US, about 3 months ago. At that
time he was told that US Consulate will apply for Clearance for the
candidate after which the candidate will be eligible for a visa. At
that time he was told that Clearance process normally takes 4-6 weeks.
His is originally from Pakistan, which could be a reason for doubt?
I would like to know what exactly do they check in clearance and also
how long it may take? He has already been to USA year before and he
was working there for a couple of years.
Do they check anything other than crime history, finger prints record,
credit history? Do they go for checking previous emails/phone calls
record or anything else? 3 months is quite a long time, but still
there is no word from them.
Thanking to all the respondents.
LD.

I have been to the US several times before on VWP. 5months ago I decided to apply for B2 visa and was also told I would have to get clearance which would take no longer than 6weeks, well I am still waiting and I don't expect to get the visa any day soon! I was born also in Pakistan but am a british citizen

well
Hi there,
I had to go through that when I applied for an F1 visa. I am eligible to travel on the visa waiver for three months but when it came to getting a visa I had to go through clearance since I was born in a country they have on the lookout list.
http://www.twmlaw.com/resources/securityclearance.html
http://www.fbi.gov/congress/congress...rity071003.htm
I applied on June 1st. Interview on July 1:st and got my visa 3 days ago. The actuall clearance was sent to W.dc in mid Aug. The first clearance request sent on July 1:st got all messed up and no one knowed that untill 6 weeks later. Luckily, otherwise ill still be waiting.
Then again I have heard that it can take up to 6 months even though it is stated everywere that it takes 30 days. I called the state department the day before I got it and told them the story, the next day I got a call from the Embassy.
Because I called? I guess I will never know.
Hope I gave you some sort of answer

Hiya NeedHelpNow,
Wanted to ask you what was the number you called up when you said you called the state department? I'm assuming you called from the UK to Washington?
thanx!

Yes, that is probably the reason. They do the clearance on anybody who has
any ties to that greater area.

Exactly what they do during clearance, or who does or does not have to go
through it, is actually classified information. But the outline is well
known; people (mostly but not exclusively male) of a certain age range and
from countries with large Muslim populations are checked by the FBI and
CIA against lists of "known terrorists".
Because there are so many applicants, the system really broke down, and
while the check was supposed to take only 30 days, I have heard of cases
where it took over a year.

Unfortunately, that won't make a difference. He probably will have to go
through the same security check again if he later needs another visa.

I would not be surprised at all if they did something like that; as far as
I know, the Eschelon project is up and running, and the NSA probably
listens in to every single phone call to and from the US, and most email
exchanges of pretty much anybody in the world.

If you do get lucky, ask when they submitted your name for clearance. That way youll know if they have sent it for clearance and when.

Re: Clearance for Visit Visa.
Thanks to all the respondents. It appears that 5, 6 months wait time
is quite normal to get clearance.
Does it mean that the Clearance process is still in progress? In case
they deny clearance will they inform the applicant of the negative
decision or the applicant will keep on lingering and waiting
indefinitely.
Are they really doing something in the meantime, or just have put the
application in backlog?? How far do they go in investigation?
Thanks once again.

Probably

They won't let you linger indefinitely, but rather deny the visa outright.
They most likely won't tell you why, though, since all that happens in a
top secret environment

It's just the backlog.
> How far do they go in investigation?
As far as I know - and this is really just guesswork, since the details
are classified - they primarily search various databases.

I found some additional information that the FBI has published at
http://www.fbi.gov/congress/congress03/hardy102303.htm
Some of the more interesting information is that the FBI says that they
are actually checking everybody, and put some people into what could be
termed a secondary check (dubbed Visa Condor and Visa Mantis). 97% are
completed within 120 days.
