Canadian Needs to Get SSN
Sorry used the wrong e-mail in the last post.
I want to get a SSN so I can do some investments in the US. According to ssn.org I
need a letter from a government agency saying I need a SSN for non work purposes.
Which agencies give out such letters the easiest? Like do Gun licenses give out
such letters? I know DMVs used to do this but the SSN cracked down on them. Anyone
know? Thanks.

Since it's for investment purposes, you may need to apply for an ITIN (individual
taxpayer identification number). An ITIN is used for the administration of tax laws,
by people who are not eligible for a social security number. You can find more about
an ITIN from the following website:

Steve,
Do you know whether this number matches the a social security number in the number of
digits, (e.g. whether it could be used in place of a social security on credit
application forms by non-resident aliens with substantial US assets).

***For your information, it has the same number of digits as the SSN***
I've looked into this
but As per Stuart's question
I'm curious as to whether it could be used in place of a social security on credit application forms by non-resident aliens with substantial US assets
Any details would be MOST APPRECIATED ....

Yes it can be used for credit applications etc. Credit companies justy use a unique number to be able to identify your credit beureau report. However, just like a new immigrant with a SSN, credit will have to be established to build a credit report. This can take a while

You can use it in place of a social security number -- whether or not
the credit company will accept it is up to them. Some may notice the
fact that it begins with '99' (and hasn't been issued by SSA) and say
'oi, this isn't an SSN'.
Can you build a credit history with an ITIN? I don't know. I don't
think so, but I could be wrong. And anyway, any credit history you may
have will disappear in a puff of smoke as soon as you qualify for and
get an SSN -- it'll build entirely from scratch.
And if you don't have a credit HISTORY (as in years) you'll get turned
down for most routine credit regardless of income and assets. I have a
six-figure income and no reported late payments, recently applied for
a credit card and got it, but got a stinking little $500 credit limit
-- as far as I can tell, because my credit history is only two years
long.

Re: Canadian Needs to Get SSN
You can do any financial transaction with an ITIN that you can do with a
SSN. Getting credit is no exception. However, it is entirely up to the
company issuing credit to accept your ITIN as a substitute for a SSN.
