Can I travel overseas the day after the Citizenship interview?
Hi, y'all..
I'll be interviewed for the citizenship (based upon the marriage with
USC) later this month. I just found out that I will have to travel
overseas on business the day right after the interview.
So, what happens after the interview? Do I get some sort of
certificate? If so, will they take away my green card?
Obviously, I won't have the US passport yet, so I'll be traveling with
my non-US passport and green card.
Can it be possible?? If anyone has any insight to it, I'd greatly
appreciate it!!!
Thanks. -J.

And if your oath ceremony is the same day, then request that you reschedule the ceremony. Why? Because if you are swore in as a USC you need a US Passport to return to the US and they take your green card at the ceremony. So if you pass the test and are scheduled for a swearing in ceremony immediately afterward, explain the circumstances and ask for a new date.

Thanks, Rene.
After the post, I looked through the USCIS site, and it said I
surrender my GC during the Oath ceremony.
*sigh*
BTW, will it be a problem to leave the country between the interview
and the oatch?

Hi there,
I was at an oath ceremony just last week and sat next to a woman who had
traveled between the interview and oath. On the oath date notification,
there's a place to check if you've been out of the country between the
interview and oath. They instructed her (and everyone else) to write out
beside that question which countries she had gone to and for how long. It
wasn't a problem.
Good luck!

In reviewing the answers in the string, it should be noted that it depends upon WHERE you are processing -- in some places, it is possible to be sworn in the day of your interview, in most, you will NOT be sworn in.
Otherwise, assuming you are not on the edge of the physical presence rules, you can generally take those short trips abroad in the interim between interview and oath taking.

Re: Can I travel overseas the day after the Citizenship interview?
Thanks all again.
I'm on the safe side of the physical presence rule, I believe. And I'm
not sure if New York City offers an option to get sworn in right at the
spot, but USCIS's Guide to Naturalization says I might be given an
"option" to take a same-day oath. So, that means, I can opt not to as
well, I guess.
I greatly appreciate all of your help :)

Unless they have changed recently, then no there is no same day oath ceremony if you interview at 20 Fed Plaza. However, if you interview at the Garden City Office in Long Island, I don't know if they do the same day or not.
A suggestion from me as the wife of a 20 Fed Plaza user for naturalization.
After the interview and test, you will most likely be told that the DAO has to have his supervisor sign off on the results OR if they are able to sign off and approve you themselves, then they 'usually' give you a piece of paper saying that you have been approved and that you will receive the appointment letter in the mail advising you of when the oath ceremony will be.
Now my advice is to be a bit aggressive at this point and ask if you can remain in the office for the letter to be issued later that morning/afternoon. My husband's DAO asked him if he would like an early Oath date (12/12 and his interview was 12/1) and if so, if he didn't mind waiting in the reception area for about an hour he would be given the appointment letter at that time.

Anyone know if same-day-oath (should we make this an acronym - SDO?) - is
available in San Francisco?
