Default Can F1 students legally work with SSN obtained in J1 status?

Hi folks,

I came to the United States 2 years ago to do a J1 internship. I liked it here, so I decided to extend my stay by studying in the States. I flew back home last December after my J1 status and visa expired, applied for an F1 visa and came back in January 2005 to begin my studies. Since I already got a SSN when I came to the US as a J1 intern, I was wondering if I can use it to seek employment as a F1 student. Do I still have to ask my DSO for authorization? I've actually heard from a friend who was in the same situation and it seems like he can just use his J1 SSN to legally work. I'm not sure though and I really don't want to violate my status. Can you tell me what I have to pay attention to in order to find employment as an F1 student?

Thanks,
Martin

You don't get a new SSN number, so you'll use that to work, as a student you are limited to work on campus and work related to the university as well as restricted hours, but you probably already know that.

The SSN has very little to do with work authorization. It is actually
yours for life, but you would still need some kind of work
authorization. Your international student adviser will be able to tell
you whether and under which conditions you can work.

The problem in many of these cases is that at one time SSA issued social security cards without the legend on them that states INS Work Authorization Required. If there is no legend on the card, then it is easy for anyone to fulfill the I-9 requirements for employment without proper work authorization from the CIS.
