can a E2visa turn into a greencard?
Hi ya'all,
I am moving the States via a e2 visa. I was wondering if it was possible that after a few years on the e2 visa could we apply for a greencard? Has anyone out there done that? If so how long do you need to remain on the e2 status?
Jim

E2 status has nothing to do with a Green Card ... They are separate.
You don't have to be in the US at all to apply for a green card.
The only thing to note is that if you enter with a non-immigrant visa
and quickly file an immigrant request (within a few months seems
typical), Immigration will suspect that you initial entry was not really
a non-immigrant entry.

I understand that. I was just enquiring if after you have been in the states for say 6-10 years on an e2 visa is there anyway you could apply for a greencard?

In order to apply for a Green Card, you need to qualify for one of the
categories. In all honesty, I can think of only one GC category that could
be based on the same job that an E-2 is based on, and that is the EB-5
category, also known as investor visa. The EB-5 Green Card requires an
investment of at least one million dollars, and has additional
requirements.
Of course, you can always get a GC through some other category that has
nothing to do with a job. In practice, though, the other categories tend
to be impossible to pursue for most people. These other categories I'm
thinking of are:
- family-based (takes years or decades in delays)
- immediate relative (if you are married to a US citizen, this would be an
option)
- lottery (takes a lot of luck)
All that aside, as soon as you start the GC process, extending your E-2 or
travelling out of the US could become difficult because E-2 presumes that
you do not intend to immigrate.

I suppose, though, that if he is the treaty investor as opposed to a key
employee, that eventually he could make enough through his investment to
put it towards a new enterprise that might qualify him for EC status.

You should go to the following link to acquire a Green Card via investment:
http://www.visausa.com/html/investment/opportunity.php
Here this company has a program that leads to an EB-5 visa with an investment of $500,000.
The program has been granted special Federal immigration status as a regional development center that uses a pilot project under the EB-5 program.
All the best.

I believe that you are connected to this company. If so it would be more honest to admit this in your post.

Have a sprog in the US; get sponsored 21 years down the road.
Make enough on your E2 to buy a business in Blighty; go back and manage it for a year; transfer yourself over on an L1.
Kick the spouse and marry a Yank while you're over here.
Go get a US master's degree while you're here and then the H1B will be more possible.
One of you work the E2 business, the other train as a nurse.
Make a million in the business.
But all these involve moving to another visa coz the E2 doesn't get you a GC.
